The Purest Blue Sky / エッサウィラにて

“We also visited the town Essaouira where both Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley spent a lot of time.
The sky here is perhaps the purest blue sky iIve seen any where in the world.”（ルーカス談）
ルーカスらペーパースカイ取材班は、モロッコの首都マラケシュから車で３時間ほどの港町エッサウィラ（Essaouira）を訪れました。ここは、ジミー・ヘンドリックスやボブ・マーリーといったミュージシャンも多くの時間を過ごした場所。マラケシュとはまた違った開放的で明るい雰囲気に包まれています。白い建物の壁が美しい町並みに、くっきりとしたコントラストをなす澄み渡った青空。
ルーカス曰く、「この街の空は、これまで見たどんな空よりも青かった。」
“I had the worst cramps in the seaside town of Essaouira. During the 60’s this town was very famous for music, as both Bob Marley and Jimi Hendrix spent considerable time in Essaouira.
There was also a lot of drug use especially LSD in this town during the ’60s so I felt kinda like the Beatles song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds as my pain increased I couldn’t walk anymore and found myself in a daze and then on my back looking up at the blue sky unable to walk.”
実はこの街を歩いている最中、ルーカスはひどい腹痛に見舞われました。（詳しくはEditor’s Note #26にて）
歩きながらも痛みはどんどん強くなり、頭の中に流れるのはビートルズの”Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”。
そしてついに歩けないほどに。意識も遠くなって・・・その時見上げた青い空。
痛みの中で見た空は、ルーカスに特別なインスピレーションを与えたのかもしれません。
