[草上のロンドン]
ロンドンといえば、僕たちのほとんどはセックス・ピストルズ、２階建てバス、古城、そしてはるか遠い遠い昔のことばのように聞こえる英語を話す人々を思い浮かべるだろう。でも僕たちPAPER SKYがやるべきなのは、いろいろな国や都市、街や人々を、少しだけ違った視点から紹介すること。だから僕たちは、もう一度ロンドンを見つめなおしてみた。するとワオ！ここには魅力的な公園がなんてたくさんあることか。すばらしい芝生、パーフェクトに美しい綿のような緑の芝生…ほら、出た。ロンドンの真髄を捉えると、こんなふうに、ロンドンっ子が喋る英語の独特なスタイルにもつれてしまうのだ。
僕たちはブレーンストーミングを続け、芝生をテーマにしてロンドンのリサーチをおこなった。すると、この場所の３０％以上が広大な緑の大地に覆われているということ、そして、同じくらいの面積をもつ世界のどんな年寄りも、ここには数多くの公園があるということがわかった。つまり、ロンドンは原っぱの街ということだ。じゃあこの原っぱで、ロンドンっ子たちはなにをしているのか？ 彼らはそこでスポーツをしている、しかもそのほとんどは、彼ら自身が生みだしたものなのだ。フットボール、ゴルフ、テニス…そう、これら偉大なスポーツは、すべてこの地から生まれたのだ。
今号のPAPER SKYでは、英国人と同じように、日本でも親しまれている競技にフォーカスし、読者の皆さんが次にロンドンを旅したときに、プレーしたり観戦したりすることのできる場所を紹介している。僕たちはロンドンにあるイングランド・プレミアリーグのスタジアムをすべて訪れ、ウィンブルドンにひざまずき、そのベルベットのような芝生を感じた。またロンドンの中心街から列車でほんの数分のところにある世界でもっとも有名なゴルフコースで、ちょっとしたパッティングを楽しんだ。さあそれでは、刈りとったばかりの芝生の香りを吸いこみながら、次のロンドン旅行に向けてティーアップ（準備）するとしよう。

[London on the Grass]
When most of us think of London we think of the Sex Pistols, double-decker buses, old castles and folks that speak English a little like what the language used to sound like a long, long, long time ago. However, it’s our job at Paper Sky to present countries, cities, towns and people in a slightly different light. So when we gave London a second look we thought, “wow”, they have an awful lot of nice parks with nice grass, green grass, fluffy green grass, beautiful fluffy green grass … and there you go. We had captured the essence of London, and even a bit of linguistic style as well.
We went ahead with our brainstorming and did a bit of research on the subject of grass and what we found was that over 30% of London is filled with open green space and that it boasts more parks than any other city of its size in the world. In short, London is the city of grass. And what do the Londoners do with all this grass? They play sports, and mainly games they invented. Yes, that’s right. Football, golf and tennis were all born here.
For this issue of Paper Sky we focused on games that most of us enjoy in Japan along with our English friends and came up with a good mix of sports to play and watch on your next trip to London. We visited all of the English Premier league football stadiums in the city, got down on our knees and felt the velvet-like grass at Wimbledon and did a bit of putting at one of the worlds most famous casual golf courses, just a few minutes by train from the center of the city. So breathe in the fragrance of freshly cut green grass and tee up for your next trip to London!
